K-State wins the 1st Governor's Cup, defeating the defending conference champions, 26-22 at KU.
Other notes from that season
Vince Gibson's third season in Manhattan starts with wins at Baylor 48-15 and at Arizona 42-27.
Up next is #2 Penn State in KSU stadium. Penn State finished the season undefeated but had to fight to get out of town with a 17-14 win.
After beating KU and Iowa State, the Wildcats were 4-1 and ranked for what I believe was only the second time ever. #11 Oklahoma and the 1969 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens came to town to play #18 Kansas State. In the Homecoming Game, the Wildcats beat up on the Sooners 59-21, to record their first ever win over a ranked opponent.
K-State was 5-1 and ranked #12 in the nation.
Then the wheels came off with the Wildcats losing their final 4 games of the season.

1970 - The following season K-State had another good year, beating #8 Colorado 21-20 and beating #17 Missouri 17-13. Eventually the season came down to a November 14th matchup at #4 Nebraska for the Conference Championship. KSU was ranked #20 with a 5-1 conference record, while the Corn's only blemish on the season was a tie at #3 USC. The Huskers won 51-13. I believe it was right before the game that news came out about the Wildcats going on probation.

There has to be somebody on this board who knows what happened these last four games of 1969 and can give us more stories about these great seasons for KSU football?
