My favorite sports show is ESPNU‘s Full Ride, now that Rick Neuheisel has rejoined the broadcast. (If only they could keep that ass Chris Childers quiet!) This morning Rick talked about 1995, his first year as head coach of the Buffs. He focused on the game against K-State in Manhattan. It was a hilarious tale, and I’m wondering if anyone remembers that game. Here’s the story as Rick told it:
Turns out, the Buffs couldn’t get a hotel in Manhattan because all of the hotels required a 3 night minimum stay so they had to stay in Topeka. Rick swears that Bill Snyder was in cahoots with KDOT, and that as the Colorado team journeyed from Topeka to Manhattan their bus ran into a suspiciously large number of detours because of road construction. As a result, the Buffs arrived at the stadium in Manhattan an hour late, thus substantially reducing their warm up time. Finally warming up during their shortened allotted time, Rick realized that another coach was standing right next to him on the visitors’ sideline as he observed/directed the Buffs’ preparations. That coach was the Cats’ co-defensive coordinator, Jim Leavitt. Already pretty pissed off, Neuheisel told him, “you can’t be here!” To which Coach Leavitt responded, “Nah, I’m good.” Neuheisel was furious and said that he was yelling and pushing on Leavitt’s chest, trying to get him to leave. It so infuriated Neuheisel that he went into the locker room, carrying on about the poor treatment, how his team needed to beat the Cats in order to go to the Cotton Bowl, fired up and totally losing his cool.
The Buffs won.
I love hearing stories like this. As a radio personality, Neuheisel tells great stories about his coaching career, all with such good humor.
Anybody know if FHCBS helped set the KDOT road construction schedule in those days??
