Special Teams -
- Usual kick short of the endzone approach
- I don't know exactly what type of blocking scheme we teach these kids for kickoff returns but it's impressive. Our three man wall blows people up and the lead protect man (Heath) blows through everyone clearing space for Burns
- 1st punt of the day pretty sky high. Probably right call that we interfered with receiver
- Heath was bumped into and from my vantage point don't think defender was blocked into it. Thank God Warmack recovered.
- Short punt by Walsh
Defense
- The first three runs of UTSA were all cutbacks toward Will Davis' area
- Our DEs of Willis and Bryant really struggled with keeping contain on the first drive too
- It's almost like the fast tempo caught our guys off guard or flat footed
- The UTSA penalties saved a touchdown - huge gaping runs to the perimeter were there the entire drive until the penalities the DEs started staying home like they were supposed too.
- Using Sam Sizelove some as a qb spy on third downs
- Danziel McDaniel was picked on the entire first series all throws were towards his direction
- Come out start of 2nd seris and attack send both lbs on a run blitz and Prewett sees the play early but takes a poor angle. Luckily holding called and 10 yard play comes back.
- Starks is pretty fast and runs down receivers
- Surprised we have Will Davis covering their star TE but holding his own. Will Davis had a good 2nd series. Sold wraps ups and holds for his team to help finish the tackle.
- UTSA starts getting cute with their play calling and going away from the running scheme that was working. - Finally take a shot at Burns but it was a poor throw. If Burns doesn't tip it safety would've had a short at interception. UTSA wasn't expecting a stunt for our line and got some pressure.
Offense
- Dimel starts over Gronk
- 1st play of the game the entire offensive line, except the right guard - Luke Hayes, have a pretty impressive push
- Hubener audibles second play of the game to Burton. Throw a little off to Burtons back shoulder but not going to get picked off that way.
- Crowd pretty loud causing Johnson's false start.
- Wow! Gronk is out playing WR on the first 3 & 6 play.
- Hubener's athleticism on the first 3rd down play was amazing. Entire play was him getting the first down. Luke Hayes makes one block when he was scrambling but no one else helped him. Kleinsorge was overmatched on the play along with Whitehair. Three interior lineman look around and block no one on what was a two man rush...
- Did a zone read where Jones is supposed to get the ball but Hubener keeps it for good yardage. Our center and right guard intentionally don't block one of the defensive tackles and head to the second level. For those that know more than me, we have done this type of blocking for years can someone explain the logic in this? It leaves an unblocked man straight to the qb and/or rb. Is it assumed the person who has the ball has enough quickness to elude the defensive lineman?
- Watch our center pull relatively nicely and Charles Jones follows him but there is no hole there. If Jones looks to the perimeter there is a huge hole there for a 15-20 yd gain. Lucky Hubener didn't keep it as he ran to the right - Right guard, Hayes got manhandled
- 3rd and 3 - Hubener follows Gronk up the middle/left but goes nowhere. Not much of a push from left side
- Silmon in 2nd series
- Hubener short hops one to Heath.
- Andre Davis with some early playing time.
- Hubener sack was due to two extra blitzers on the right side.
- Kody Cook catch was awesome and dead on throw by Hubener. Amazed that UTSA is only rushing two but they are getting pressure our tackles were overwhelmed by their DEs.
- Hubener with another poor short throw to Heath.
- Hubener is going to make things happen when the play breaks down. UTSA didn't have lane discipline and there were running lanes all over the place.
- Heath dropping that 1st down is inexcusable. Hit him in the hands.
- Horrible starting field position entire first quarter
- WRs aren't helping Hubener out. Not getting much separation.
- Our guards are getting man handled. Anyone know anything about the UTSA defensive line? Was this more about their d line being good our o line getting exposed again?
- O line finally puts a man on a man and Jones has a nice 5 yard gain.
More to come later. Going to watch the Chiefs game and I'll report more later.
