Our struggles over the last 6 quarters on offense remind me a lot of the problems that plagued the offense in 1992. That year we had a serviceable offensive line, a couple of serviceable running backs, a weak WR corps outside of Coleman, and completely ineffective QB play. In '92 our QB was Jason Smargiasso and he was very similar to Hubs in that he was big and could run and really struggled throwing anything short or medium and tended to overthrow everything that was deep. Teams simply stacked the box against us and dared us to throw which we could not do.......the numbers were hideous......twice in 7 league games the offense failed to score any points......even the mediocre teams we played in the non-con had no issues stopping us.
It all came down to the inability of Smargiasso to complete passes that moved the chains......things got so bad that when we played at OU our coaching staff ran a version of triple option football and threw about 8 passes the whole game....it almost worked as we darn near beat the ranked Sooners in a 16-14 loss. That team finished 5-6. I am not saying we are going to fix the issues of the 2015 offense but I am saying this offensive coaching staff has been here before.
