one thing that has bothered me this year has been the amount of position groups that don't seem to be getting better throughout this season so that we can have hope for the future
we all knew this year would be a challenging year... but you get through challenging years by measuring the growth of the groups and what that group will look like in the coming years. And as we look around, there seems to be more red flags that i was thinking before the season started
Oh sh!t groups
1. QB - We are backed into a corner where this staff has no choice but to re-recruit sky to simply buy some development time. It's a trade the future move just so you have something to root for next year. with this group of playmakers, it's hard to see a lot of early success for rubley if they don't get sky back
2. WR - @ksu4all mentioned it's hard to miss as many years in a row on WR recruiting, yet this staff may just have done it (it's harsh for travis, but a dude known for catching more than his athleticism should probably be on the field already)
3. LB - its amazing that losing 2 19th year seniors has caused the defense to go from average to one of the worst in the p5.
4. S - they've proven they can find secondary pieces... but playing elder so much is a flaw.
Groups to watch
1. RB - for as bad as bill left this group, this should be an easier group to fix just because of the position. Deuce is a star, bordering on superstar, but not developing others, or recruiting it well is a problem. this SHOULD be an easy position to sell. Theres 15 carries to anybody talented next year.
2. TE - lose moore next year and im not sure where to go from there
3. DT - depth is super scary, but does feel like they get dudes to play
Groups deserving some praise..
1. OL - i think this will be a top 3 group in the big12 in 2 more years
2. DE - not sure they are that great or just the one group on defense not in total collapse, but they've done ok and you can see glimmers
3. CB - i still think we need to do a deeper dive on how coach is running his system where EBD doesn't get showcased sooner... but they seem to recruit it well
I "think" the idea was they could come here and use their championship pedigree and work ethic to simply out-execute everybody else... as they did at NDSU... but i think we are seeing, now, that we need better athletes and a larger focus on recruiting as some of these position coaches don't seem to be as elite in the P5 as they were in FCS
