The NCAA is considering a proposal to give every Fall Sport Athlete an additional year of eligibility due to the disruptions of Covid-19. I decided to take a quick look at our football roster to see what that would look like for next season. These numbers are the players that I believe are on scholarship plus the ones we have currently committed.
Freshman: 48
Sophomore: 17
Junior: 14
Seniors: 19 - It is proposed that they would be allowed to come back, but wouldn't count towards our 85 person scholarship limit.
Based on this math we would be able to take another 6 recruits in this years class. Given the large number of Freshmen already on the roster and the limited spots likely to be available in 2022 (only spots would be from the attrition of FR-JR classes) I could see the staff deciding to carryover most of the remaining spots for this year. I can't imagine that they would want to have more than 50 scholarship Freshmen on the roster from a management, development, and focus perspective.
Assuming we have 8 to 10 players leave (Fr-JR) and bring over 4 to 6 scholarships from the class of 2021, we could still have a class of 12 to 16 in 2022.
This is all based on the current NCAA proposal. The status of eligibility could change tomorrow when it goes in front of the NCAA Board of Governors.
