Cleveland’s Gabe Ortega breaks free from a Mayfield defender during the Storm’s 63-27 win over the host Trojans on Saturday in a Class 6A football semifinal played at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.
No. 1 Cleveland on Saturday afternoon followed No. 2 Eldorado into next week’s Class 6A state football championship game. The Storm was nearly at its full-throttle best as it manhandled No. 5 Mayfield 63-27 at the Field of Dreams to punch its ticket into the final.
“It’s pretty neat,” Cleveland senior quarterback Gabe Ortega said following a game in which he rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for another 220 yards and two scores. Ortega — who has committed to play at the University of New Mexico next year — and Cleveland rolled up an easy-looking 537 yards against the Trojans’ overmatched defense on a gray, chilly Las Cruces day. Ryan Anderson, Shawn Nieto and Ortega had early scoring runs; Ortega’s was a terrific 65-yarder in which he was on the option, surveyed his reads, stayed patient, then exploded through the hole.
The Storm scored on its next four possessions, with Ortega twice connecting with Williams on scoring passes. The first was a diving catch in the far corner for an 11-yard score, and the other was mostly Williams, who took an intermediate-range pass and went 62 yards. “It was a big win for us, for our program,” said Williams, who also has committed to the Lobos. “We had to go through (Mayfield) to win a state championship.”
One more game to win a State Championship and an undefeated season!! Go STORM!!!!
