Offense
Jacadia Wright’s one and only carry was blocked excellently. I wish they would give him the ball more. He is our north/south runner.
Something started clicking for the offensive line. It was anything great but you started to see some cohesion and guys trusting each other one the first TD of the quarter. Perhaps it was getting in a rhythm and finally being able to play with each other for full two quarters but a light went on a little.
Vaughn doesn’t need much of a hole and he gone! The long td rush - the oline blocked well. (I still can’t believe they were going to go for two!)
The TD that wasn’t with Brlley Moore - OU absolutely sold out on the blitz. (I may or may not have thrown things after the illegal formation call.). I’m not sure who was in the wrong on that - Skylar, Moore or the WRs not moving where they are supposed too.
Super happy for Blake Lynch. Was scared to death when he kicked it.
A nearly huge mistake was made when we hiked the ball with nearly 15 seconds left on the play clock our last series but I did like the aggressiveness and I would have passed it too towards the end of the game.
Defense
A light came on for Duke as well this quarter. He did pure bull rush moves over and over again and pushed the tackle right into Rattler multiple times. He also started using an inside spin move the left tackle struggled with. I think Duke shared this info because Massie’s big sack came on a spin move as well. That Duke hurt his shoulder at towards the end of the game scares me but he kept playing.
Hated some of 3rd down calls. We bunched 2 d lineman together and the center had no one to block. Don’t understand why you would do that. Wyatt Hubert nearly got another roughing the passer call on the 3rd and 15 near the end zone. Drew Wiley and Jayden Pickle were impressive when we played them straight up. When we tried to do stunts with them not so much. I think Spencer Trussell grew up some today too causing some havoc in the back field.
The holding call against the Sooners mid-quarter absolutely changed the game. Sooners were driving and the call changed the drive. I found it interesting the number of flags thrown this quarter. That’s pretty unusual when the tame is on the line,
Loved AJ Parker getting a block after a rough sequence where he botched a tackle.
You can tell OU’s qb hasn’t faced many pressure situations in a game. He got happy feet and left the pocket a lot this quarter.
Boye-Doy laid absolute wood on a kid - I want to see more of him in the secondary.
Saw the jet package of all defensive ends this game. Didn’t think much of the package thus far as no discipline regarding their lanes. Got lucky with OU’s second to last drive they called holding on 3rd down.
I honestly don’t know that OU made the right call punting with 3 minutes left and only one timeout...OU coaching staff made a lot of questionable decisions this quarter. I can’t believe OU didn’t sell out to block our last punt.
Overall -
I cannot believe the heart of this team. It’s a testament to this coaching staff and players that they were able to overcome the shortage of players, playing different positions and to be honest an OU team that has 50+ 4 and 5 star players. I’m glad for each and everyone of them. To be honest I don’t think the shock of winning this game final wore off until sometime this morning. I rode the game off when it was 35-14...and then slowly but surely we came back. When we kicked the field goal at the end I thought this was Arkansas State all over again and OU would score a TD to win. McPhearson played an awesome game - int, forced fumble and led the team in tackles.
Concerns going forward -
Skylar’s health - enough said
Offensive line coming together - Not sure how short we were on guys here but only 6 played. I was under the impression they wanted to get some more rotation here but maybe they thought playing together was more important.
Defensive line scheme - The blueprint is there to beat us here. ARkansas State showed it and OU didn’t follow it but the runs behind the ends were there all day. Need to find some ways to address this.
Two biggest issues that need to be worked on
#1 - Mental errors/self-discipline. This has been issue both Klieman’s years here. I love he allows the players to be college kids and have fun again but the taunting calls in back to back games which was also a problem last year has to stop. The little details of lining up formations correctly (Moore’s TD which was called back.) Obviously I’m not behind the scenes nor do I know what is going on but the accountability isn’t there on this issue from what I continue to see as the issue hasn’t improved.
#2 - The elephant in the room - What is going on with Wyatt Hubert? I’m just going to flat out say it - he has been bad the last 2 games. Of the 4 starting defensive lineman he was the fourth best. Maybe it’s the scheme, his technique has not been good, maybe his head got a little too big after all the all conference hype, maybe he is playing hurt - DY made mention he might not play the first game but I expected more. Some of this issue involves teams scheming him out of the equation but it is more than that. He is consistently running himself out of plays and he is not hustling to make plays if they get past him. I watched Jayden Pickle, Drew Wiley and Khalid Duke all make effort plays against OU. I didn’t see that with Hubert. He got a sack but also got a personal foul call for hitting the QB in the head and a critical holding call towards the end of the game. He is supposed to be the best player on defense and a team captain. What I’ve seen so far from him hasn’t been that. I’m hoping the other team captains, Buddy Wyatt or Chris Klieman watch film with him and talk to him about what is going on and how he can improve. I’m sure some will think this may be a harsh assessment but many felt like he would forgo next year and enter the NFL draft. Unless he improves significantly that is not going to happen. He has the ability to be great and still has time to make improvements. Which is what we all want for him.
For now all - enjoy the week and bask in a great victory.
