For the sake of just focusing on where the team is at currently, I gathered the up to date statistics nationally for each category and also compared where we ended up last season after 13 games. It's just a snapshot, and I'm sure you'll enjoy analyzing and giving your opinions below. As Bill Parcells once said, "You are what your record says you are." Nobody is happy with 4-4. Besides firing everyone and their mother, let's focus on the areas that CAN improve to help us win the next 4. It may be a pipe dream for some, but when we lost 6 a few years ago, nobody had us winning down the back side of the schedule, and it happened. EMAW

My thoughts on the comparison to 2016. I was shocked to see some of the comparisons be almost identical to last year after a full season. At this point this season, we are actually ranked higher in passing offense than we were a year ago. If we continue to run the football like we did against KU, we should continue to get closer to that 22nd ranking by season's end in Rushing offense.
Coming into the season, the offense was expected to carry the team with so many faces returning. The struggles have been especially highlighted with our 3rd down conversions. We are near the bottom of FBS compared to being ranked 22nd last season. Same with 4th Down Conversions, which we continue to struggle with. Our Redzone Offense is 68th right now, compared to 10th a year ago. These are stats that can significantly improve if we get healthy at Quarterback. Will be interesting to see where we end up in those categories.
As for the defense, this unit has really struggled to get off the field on 3rd downs compared to last year as well ranking 93rd whereas they were 40th in 2016. Why the struggle? First off, we have played some of the better teams in the conference offensively already with TCU and OU. In addition, inexperience at safety, linebacker, and the lack of pass rush has hurt this statistic. Injuries haven't helped at Nickel and Safety during the OU game.
The Passing Yards allowed has never been a stat that really matters in the Big 12. OSU is ranked 71st, WVU 105th, Texas Tech 126, Iowa State 81, Texas 114, TCU 58, OU 75.
Many on here are hung up with allowing quarterbacks to throw for big yardage, but it's a waste of breath because all the teams in the Big 12 are doing the same thing. It's conference wide, and tells you just how potent the offenses are in this league.
The stat that does matter significantly is Scoring Defense. KSU is ranked 51st right now, and that is compared to finishing 25th a year ago. We have given up 24 points per game this season, and gave up 22.3 last season. Right now we are ranked 5th in the Big 12 in this category.
Scoring Offense is pretty similar this year compared to last year as we are averaging 32 points per game. We are ranked 7th in the Big 12 in scoring offense thus far.
My thoughts on improvement start with getting that time of possession statistic back in our favor. Our defense needs to get off the field on 3rd downs and give the ball to our offense. Our offense must start sustaining drives and keeping these potent offenses we face on the other sideline. That is the formula that has worked to the tune of nearly 9 wins per season in 2.0. When we are ranked 89th in the country in time of possession we have a big problem since both offensive and defensive units compliment one another best when the offense is chewing clock, and the defense is getting stops on 3rd downs.
And Pass Rush................we have to find a pass rush or create one! That also comes with the risk of giving up more big plays.....
