Wildcats picked up their 1st win in conference play against Oklahoma State highlighted by one of the strangest fourth quarters you will ever see in a basketball game. Here are some thoughts as I sat on press row.
Legend of the Wesemann
By the time she's done at Kansas State, it's possible that Kindred Wesemann may not have her number retired in the rafters of Bramlage Coliseum but it's clear she's made her mark on the Kansas State program. Once again, in a clutch situation she comes through. In what seemed like a matter of moments, Wesemann hits the game tying three, picks up a steal and takes a charge. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the entire K-State program.
Lockdown Defense
The Wildcats held Cowgirls standout Brittney Martin in check most of the night and contested a ton of Oklahoma State's shots in the second half, really never letting them get into an offensive flow. Although both teams struggled to get any type offense, I give a ton of credit to the Wildcats for never giving up on defense, even when Oklahoma State made that run to extend their lead in the second half.
Strange Final Five Minutes
Up 44-37 it appeared that Oklahoma State would pull away but in a five minute stretch everything changed. In the same five, almost six minute span the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run and Oklahoma State missed FOURTEEN shots in a row. That was the story in the ballgame. K-State's never say die attitude from every single player and coach on the K-State side was on display and the result in their first win in conference play.
Final Analysis
They needed this win in the worst way possible, an 0-5 start in the Big 12 puts you fighting your way back to the bubble and with the conference as good as it is 1-4 it would be hard to grab key wins. Luckily TCU, Kansas and Texas Tech are all sitting near the bottom of the standings so there is a good chance that the Wildcats can possibly get a winning streak going as they enter a very rough month of February.
