My assessment of K-State’s 58-50 win against Pitt State

-Wildcats struggle on the boards again

All credit goes to Pitt State, they hustled for every rebound and really we’re better than K-State across the board, except on the scoreboard at the end. Pitt State hammered the Wildcats on the offensive boards 21-9 and even coach Jeff Mittie admitted after the game that Pitt State should have won this game.

-Lewis struggles to get going

With a clear advantage in the post, Bre Lewis came up short in her effort to be a force against the Gorillas. Pitt State sent double teams with not much pressure and it froze Lewis and forced her to either turn it over or pass it up. Not something you need out of your 6-5 post player.

-Wesemann to the rescue

Simply put, Kindred Wesemann saved K-State’s bacon. Down almost double digits in the second half, Wesemann’s 19 second half points was just enough to secure a Wildcat victory. If Wesemann, Lewis and Megan Deines can all get it going at the same time, this team can be very dangerous, especially now that they have depth.

-Supporting cast comes up big (and may need to for the long term)

On a night where the starting five was less than stellar, it was the reserve unit who came up big in the second half. Bri Craig, Antoinette Taylor and Kayla Goth came up big in terms of changing up the pace of the game against the Gorillas. I’m continually impressed with the play of Antoinette Taylor, she’s a great spark coming off the bench and don’t be surprised to see if her role increases as we creep along into the early stretches of the season.

Final Analysis

There was more good than bad that came out of this game, the inconsistencies that hurt this team a year ago are showing up with the lack of rebounding and effort at times. It’s tough to have this game be your finale before the real thing starts on Friday at Tulsa. It’s clear that this team has solid pieces 1-8 which is good but putting it together for an entire four quarters remains to be seen.
