Our firm has a client---if he is on the board I will let him say who he is--who tried out for KSU MBB back when Jack had tryouts each year. He had made it through the first tryout and the second one was scheduled at a time when he happened to have a Chemistry test. The Chem professor told him that he would have to choose between the tryout and the test. Being a young man who had his perspectives right---still a man who has got it together today---he went to Jack and told him he had to choose the test. Jack told him it was a wise choice and as he turned to go Jack told him you have passed the second tryout we will see you at the next one. I have already mentioned in my top 5 KSU experiences Jack stopping to thank the students in line the day of the KU-KSU game in '73 and these two events have forever put Jack in my mind as a KSU legend for the right reasons.
There are a lot of reasons KSU is near and dear to my heart even though I finished up at FHSU. Loved Manhattan having been born there but when I got a job throwing chain on an oil rig one summer I stayed out in the western part of the state so I could graduate with no student debt. Sidebar: Learned a lot about life on that rig with the Vietnam vets I shared a dog house with.
