When I opened up GPC this morning and saw the headlining story, it was no shock to see that Foster was dismissed and Jevon is transferring. I was surprised about Tre Harris, and I would assume most didn't think he was gonna leave this off-season, especially by dismissal, but it's not a huge loss.
The first thought that came to my mind when seeing Foster's name as one of the dismissed players was, "Good. It had to be done." I was mentally ready for it to happen. If this was just a total shock and just came out of out nowhere, it would have been a different story.
But it is kind of weird being ok seeing our best scorer dismissed from the team while at the same time losing two seniors who were the #2 and 3 scorers from a team that I already didn't have much hope for next year for any significant improvement.
So here we are. Things, they are a changin' and even though we are probably in for another disappointing season next year, there just might be enough positives/hope to look forward to like: 1) Dean Wade 2) Will Nigel Johnson make a step up? 3) Will DJ be ready and healthy to play next season? 4) Will Brandon Bolden be able contribute anything significant? (I still have some hopes that he can regularly come in off the bench and provide some energy) 5) Will Barry Brown or Kamau Stokes be some sort of answer at the guard position and maybe step up as the true point guard we desperately need? 6) Malek will probably be called on to play more minutes next year and I think with the right work ethic and mindset he could be significant contributor, especially with such a lack of veteran starters next year. 7) What will we get out of Iwundu? He has shown that he has a good upside and maybe with the pressure of being a Junior he will step up as a leader and be more consistent (especially on the offensive end)
I refuse to get my hopes about Dante Williams as a freshman. But I am open to being surprised. If nothing else he will provide a big body to get some fouls.
I am really not expecting a big turnaround just because there is some monster voids to be filled and it would be foolish to expect a year of big improvements and an NCAA tournament. At this point, I don't think that Currie would fire Bruce next year if they fail to make the tournament, just because for better or for worse the understanding is that next season is a rebuilding year. I guess it really all depends on what our final record is and if next year's team can come together and play with some pride, effort, and show that they really do care and want to play for and wear KSU colors.
I don't know, I can't say I am that I am optimistic about any major improvements but the dismissals and Jevon's transfer are the right step forward for righting the ship.
We shall see. But as always, GO CATS!
