I'm sure everyone is nearly burned out on this topic, but this is my perspective from someone who sat in Ahearn Fieldhouse and now have 2 daughters at KSU. I'm in my mid 40's and vividly remember being in 4th grade and hearing an F KU chant while watching Rolando Blackmon and Ed Nealy in Ahearn. Due to the severity of the word, I couldn't even look at my dad, and remember trying not to laugh or even smile, but internally I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The chant, the atmosphere, the KU hate - it was heaven. Right or wrong, it's one of those few memories from my childhood that are still clear as day in my mind. Fast forward to my first year of college - the Mitch Richmond, Steve Henson, Will Scott days. Same chant, same atmosphere, same memory that seems as though it just happened yesterday. Immediately thereafter starts the losing streak vs KU. Fast forward to the present. My oldest is a junior at KSU, and while I understand those that are disappointed in our student body for the vulgar chant, I am also extremely thankful that my daughter was fortunate enough to be a college kid, participate in sandstorm and the chant, and had the opportunity to rush the court. I've been relegated to watching the recent KU victories on TV. I thought it was simply a K S U chant until my daughter told me otherwise. I feel it is similar to the KSU band incident this year. You see what you want to see and you can hear what you want to hear. No, I wouldn't want to explain to a young child what they were chanting, but it could undoubtedly be explained to a child that the students were chanting K S U, which is what it sounded like to this shirt tuck. Call me a poor parent, but this chant has been a part of KSU vs KU matchups forever, and I for one, am glad my junior daughter got to experience it and am hopeful that my freshmen daughter gets the same opportunity.
