I posted a while back, the most important thing about being ranked in Basketball - IMO, is that being ranked helps you get a better seed. Yes, the NCAA committee uses different data, indexes and rankings, but no doubt they are influenced by a team being ranked in the AP Top 25.

The committee's early Top 16:
Top 4 ranked teams in the AP = committee 1 seeds.

There were only 2 teams ranked outside the AP's Top 16 that made the Committee's Top 16
#17 - Iowa State
#19 - Wisky
No team ranked higher than 19, made the committe's top 16.

The two teams ranked in the AP-Top 16 that did not make the Committee's Top 16
Virginia Tech (lost after Monday, but before the committee announced their Top 16)
Villanova (lost some games early, but have been moving up).

So again, I still contend that being ranked, influences the committe and helps your seeding.
Peace be with you.
