But McCarthy met his match in Edward R. Murrow, the legendary CBS broadcast news pioneer, who took on McCarthy by fact-checking his public statements, closing his show in March 1954 by saying, "We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. ... We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason."
