Just got the annual report, for the 6th straight year we've had a budget surplus (FY 2010 thru FY 2015). John Currie took over for Bob Krause on June 7, 2009. We were a financial mess back then and had several secret contracts that were embarrassing...... [Krause was in over his head and that will forever be part of Wefald's legacy.]
1) The AD is supposed to manage the Athletics Department and the budget. We have increased our revenue by 47% from 2010 to 2015 (from $48.5M to $71.5M) and we have had a surplus every year. I would give ADJC an A (the performance of the two revenue generating teams and the Big XII obviously get a lot of this credit as well). I don't think we could have done a lot better during that span no matter who was managing it.
2) The AD is supposed to create a vision and raise money. ADJC has helped raise $50M for the Vanier Family Football Complex. A lot of that credit has to go to LHCBS but ADJC has created the vision. I would give ADJC an A+ for 'vision' and an A- for fund raising for a solid A overall.
3) The AD is supposed to retain and get the best coaches available to maintain #1 and #2. Krause (aka Wefald) hired LHCBS 2.0 so ADJC does not get any credit for that and it doesn't sound like those two are best buddies (but they do seem to work it out). ADJC did not see eye to eye with HCFM and FM moved on. I do not want to debate this but by all accounts, it was probably time for him to go. Then ADJC hired HCBW and BW won a share of the Big XII his first year but has under-performed since then. I think the jury is still out and BW needs to have an improved team this year followed by a tourney team next year; otherwise, ADJC will be 0-1 on coaches. I think it was time for Deb to move on and the new Women's coach seems to be a good egg. ADJC gets a C to date. The next football coach will make or break this one.
4) The final role for an AD is NCAA violations/compliance. We are not cheaters like KU or the SEC so I like that a lot. But sometimes it seems that ADJC is a little too far the other way (ref. Jam Sam's game time suspension and his role in making Dr. Tracz into a national speed bump). Regardless, we have clean programs and squeaky clean coaches, ADJC gets an A+.
So I've got him doing very well in 3 of the 4 categories. What do you think????
