Just a quick look at how things have played out in the first few weeks of Big 12 play.
@ksu_FAN posted his Big 12 only stats this morning so this will be more about the teams, standings and look ahead to schedules.
Rankings:
Net and KenPom are both updated daily. If you want a great site to follow to keep up with movement in the NET, use Warren Nolan. He does a great job of keeping up with the ups and downs. Every game matters in the NET and efficiency and who you played makes a big difference. K-State is already up 18 spots from the original rankings on the 4th due to the closer than expected loss at Texas Tech. Texas Tech actually fell in the rankings even though they won by double digits. Iowa State has jumped 27 spots since Monday with the close loss to Texas. K-State is now last in both KenPom and NET.
Standings with NET and KenPom rankings:
1. Baylor 2, 2
1. Texas 9, 7
3. Kansas 14,12
4. West Virginia 18,13
4. Texas Tech 20,15
4. Oklahoma 49,44
4. TCU 83,80
8. Oklahoma State 45,42
8. K-State 185,152
10. Iowa State 182/88
Biggest Surpise so far:
KU getting steamrolled at home by Texas. Texas is better, but the final score was a shocker.
POY so far has narrowed itself to a five player race with Cade Cunningham and Jared Butler being 1/2 in some order and Matt Coleman, Jalen Wilson and Derek Culver coming right in behind them I think.
Freshman of the Year was never really in question, but Cunningham's AAU teammate Mike Miles has really pushed to be in the conversation as is Greg Brown.
Mac McClung will run away with the Newcomer of the Year votes.
Defensive POY is really tough but I think Davion Mitchell is the best defender in the league followed by Culver and Samuel getting votes.
All Big 12 First team:
Jared Butler
Cade Cunningham
Jalen Wilson
Matt Coleman
Derek Culver
All Big 12 Second Team:
Macio Teague
RJ Nembhard
Austin Reaves
Davion Mitchell
Issac Likelele
All Big 12 Third Team:
Terrence Shannon
Mac McClung
Ochai Agbaji
Courtney Ramey
Brady Manek
Looking ahead to the next couple of weeks, we could see some of the standings start to shake out.
K-State has arguably it's two most winnable games left on Saturday and Wednesday with Oklahoma State and Iowa State at home before traveling to Texas next Saturday. They need at least one win or the losing streak could get very long.
West Virginia has Texas at home and Baylor on the road in their next two before getting TCU at home.
Oklahoma State has 4 games in the 7 days with K-State and Oregon State on Saturday and Sunday and then they host KU and OU next week.
