Someone in another thread said we would never be able to dominate (or at least compete with) KU since they were a blueblood. Well it really wasn't that long ago that things changed for KU with the hire of Roy Williams after Larry Brown left after 1988 championship.
K-State had been to more NCAA tournaments than KU until 1992. 19 for KU and 20 for K-State in 1990. 22 for KU and 21 for K-State in 1993 - Since 1993 - 7 for K-State and 23 for KU.
Before 1988, KU had only one NC in 1952 and K-State had played in but lost NC in 1951. KU had played in two others in 1953 and 1957.
Series was tied in 1923 23-23 but then KU went on a long run of wins until 1947 when series was 77-31 KU. I like to say the modern age was after WWII so from 1945/46 - 1982/83 K-State led series 51-44. Wasn't until 1985/86 that KU led 52-51. By end of that 1992/93 season, KU led the series from 1945/46 - 1992/93 65-56. Not much domination for that 47 year period.
In their 1988 championship year, K-State had beat them in Lawrence 72-61 then lost in Manhattan 64-63 and beat KU again in Big 12 tournament 69-54. OU had won the Big 12. It was supposed to be K-State beating KU 71-58 in elite 8 and ending up playing OU for the NC.
When we built Bramlage, it was supposed to seat 16,000 which was more than the 15,200 seating of Allen Fieldhouse but when they started building they were short funds and cut the seating to 13,500 and then later because of ADA or fire rules cut it to 13,340 and then to add the small suite boxes cut it to 12,528 which is almost what Ahearn had at 12,200. Then K-State would not match Florida's offer for Lon Kruger and everything went downhill from there with hiring of Altman, Asbury, and Wooldridge with each coach worse than the other. KU hired Roy Williams then Bill Self. Everyone was for building Bramlage to have a newer, nicer, and was supposed to be bigger stadium than KU. Shortly after though, Kansas State stop putting money in basketball and was one of the last in league to build a practice facility. This was the start of the end. KU kept putting money in Allen Fieldhouse, practice facilities, fancy dorm rooms, and a museum with rules of basketball.
When Self retires, KU could drop like Kentucky did for a short time or how Indiana and UCLA has or Nebraska did in football. It is hard to get the right coach.
