Wanted to provide a quick weekend recap of 2017 happenings.
First things first: The open recruiting period is now closed. There will be no "in-person" contact with prospective athletes between now and January 12th, when things reopen for a short period prior to Signing Day. Letters, texting, etc. are still permitted.
As far as individuals go, there were only two official visitors on campus over the weekend- much less than I originally anticipated. Wyatt Hubert told me that just he and Drew Wiley were visiting. All other commitments who have not already made an official visit (that rules out Eli Huggins, Spencer Misko, Chabastin Taylor, and Elijah Walker) are set to make their officials the weekend of January 21 when K-State hosts West Virginia in basketball.
Also scheduled for that weekend, or so I've heard, will be Sam Barnes. He's probably the number one priority right now when it comes to the cornerback position. Barnes was on a visit to Colorado this past weekend and (judging by his Twitter) it would appear things went very well. The Buffaloes will be around until the end with him and could prove to be K-State's toughest competition.
Another major priority for 2017 was also out visiting this weekend. Evan Fields took his long awaited trip to Arizona State and was joined by his cousin and current OU commit Justin Broiles. Like Barnes in Boulder, it seems Fields was also heavily impressed with what he witnessed from the Pac 12 rep Sun Devils (again, via his Twitter).
A recruit being dazzled by what Tempe has to offer shouldn't come as any sort of surprise. It happens 99.9% of the time and that's why so many prospects visit in the first place; a free trip to Arizona State isn't something you turn down, regardless of how interested you are. In the case of Fields though, this can go one of three ways:
1) He and Broiles decide it's the best option for both of them to play together. They go ASU.
2) Broiles sticks with OU and Fields waits for the Sooners to offer, playing together closer to home.
3) Broiles sticks with OU but Fields can't afford to wait/isn't that interested in the Sooners and decides between K-State and Oklahoma State because ASU is simply too far to go alone.
Personally, I just can't see Fields at ASU. He's incredibly family oriented, particularly since the death of his father as a child. He has an older brother who I believe lives in Oklahoma City, but it's been Evan who has been the shining star of the household. He won't want to go far. This is still K-State vs. Oklahoma State until OU gets involved (if they ever do).
Last but not least, at the end of this week we should get some clarity on where Xavier Davis stands. If you missed the blurb on him in last week's Recruiting Roundup, click HERE to read more. The three-star DE and, at one time, silent commit to the Wildcats says he'll know by mid-week where he'll be heading next year because Junior College mid-year 'Signing Day' is Wednesday. I'll try to figure out more on him before that time comes but it will likely be K-State or Oregon State. I think he knows K-State is the better situation football wise, but Corvallis and the northwest are home so we'll see.
And finally, speaking of the northwest and Oregon in particular, things are still very quiet on the Daniel Green front. I've tried reaching out through various outlets and the offered LB simply can't be reached. Even the other Rivals sites in that area haven't had much luck getting in touch. It's obvious he's a major want for K-State, so I'll continue to explore other ways to find details about his recruitment. It hasn't been easy.
UPDATE: Here's the latest on Daniel Green from our National Rivals team.
