Capitalizing on A&M turnovers.
Not saying the turnovers were still not big, each turnover stopped A&M drives, BUT after intercepting Knight, the CATS go 3 & out (-3 yards).
But what stung the most, was not capitalizing on the fumble recovery in A&M territory right before halftime. The CATS had a golden opportunity to step on A&M’s throat before half-time.
As it was, the CATS failed to convert a 4th & 1 play.
I wanted K-State go for it on 4th down, but I wasn’t crazy about the play-call. The O-line got pushed back into the backfield… Jesse’s foot got stepped on by his own player (the way the play was looking, not sure Jesse would have gotten a 1st down had his foot had not been stepped on). A&M was selling out at on the run on that play, it’s too bad K-State didn’t call a pass play in that scenario.
And don’t get me wrong on this post, I’m absolutely thrilled about the win, not trying to nitpick.
I’m just saying, the CATS missed a golden opportunity to expand the lead right before half-time.
Often times, when a team wins a close game and they were +2 or +3 or +4 in turnovers, you can say the team won because of turnovers, I don’t think you can say that about the K-State game (again, not saying the turnovers weren’t important, but they weren’t killers for A&M).
Put it this way, had K-State’s defense not came up big late in the 4th quarter to stop A&M (and lost), I for one would be talking about the missed opportunity right before the end of the 1st half.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BTW … it sure looked like A&M’s receiver lost possession of the football on the 40 yard pass that led to A&M’s last score (and on the zoomed in shot, the ball clearly hit the ground, IMO).
GO STATE !
