I went through the condensed game looking at tackling, coverage, pressure and the defense as a whole

Takeaways
  • Huge week-over-week improvement in total missed tackles since I started doing this following the TCU game
    • TCU: 29 missed tackles
    • OU: 24 missed tackles (5 alone on the long Ceedee Lamb run after catch)
    • KU: 8 missed tackles (4 came on a pair of 3Q Pooka runs, one of which was called back for holding). Otherwise only 4 other defensive snaps included a missed tackle and they were all inconsequential to the outcome of the play
  • There were very few "wow" plays from our D, but rather just 11 guys all doing their jobs when put into positions to succeed by their coaches
  • Projecting Forward: I'm still flumoxed how Texas couldn't contain the KU offense
    • We didn't do anything physically amazing, just solid as heck both coaching and execution
    • With KU you can see the athletes at WR and Pooka's got juice but our DLine never let Stanley get comfortable in part because that KU Oline is turrable
    • I watched the 2nd half of KU/UT and they looked very evenly matched with KUs offense hitting very few speed bumps on their way to the endzone
    • I fully expect we will put double digit points on the board in multiple quarters this coming Saturday

Alphabetical player breakdown
Name, # tackles made, # tackles missed, coverage on passes defended, pressure notes
  • Alexander 2 made 0 missed
  • Ball 1 made 1 missed consistent pressure albeit often flying by as Stanley side-stepped. Could have had 3 sacks if more under control once he gets to the QB
  • Davies 1 made 0 missed
  • Dishon 2 made 1 missed. Q1 sack and another very good Q1 pressure. Trey's presence was felt all game
  • Duke 1 made (great hustle on a receiver crossing the field after a catch) 0 missed. Khalid got his first sack in Q2. He should have had 2. In Q4 he stunted coming under Ball and Hubert with nobody between he and Stanley. Duke's angle was too wide and Stanley easily escaped the pocket. He's still learning. His athleticism is evident. I worry that an agile OT will just manhandle him given how slight he is. This is a kid that was playing WR a year ago. In High School.
  • Durham 1 made
  • Fletcher 1 made
  • Goolsby 3 made 1 missed. Good coverage on McPherson INT. Goolsby took away the underneath throw forcing Stanley to try and throw the perfect ball over a defender. He failed. Hard.
  • Green 1 made
  • Hubert 3 made (quiet day with plenty of focus from Dearman and Co.)
  • W Jones 2 made 1 missed. Good coverage on Q3 pass defended in red zone (good throw could have been picked). Late rotation on a short out route for a 3rd down conversion that was too easy.
  • Massie 1 made. Bad pursuit angle on a Q4 Velton Gardner long run where Boom crashed into the line too hard, giving up the edge and leaving his half of the field wide open for a cutback lane. He doesn't appear to have any explosion in his legs right now.
  • McGee 1 made
  • McPherson 1 made. Beautiful INT after he rolled off his coverage assignment
  • Mittie 1 made 1 missed
  • Neil 2 made 0 missed. Pass Interference call covering Parchment in Q3 was too hard to see. Camera late to pan over
  • Parker 2 made 0 missed. Got burnt in Q1 by Parchment on what could have been an explosive TD with a better throw down the sideline.
  • Patterson 1 made 0 missed. One neutral coverage
  • Patton 5 made 2 missed. Q2 Int where he did his job and got to the flat in a hurry. Both Patton's missed tackles were Q3 when he appear to be dealing with a nagging arm injury that Hazleton dismissed earlier in the week. Need him healthy as he was very good prior to the issue.
  • Sullivan 2 made 1 missed. In Q1 Sullivan shot the gap for a TFL that appeared to be a straight read/react play on Pooka that I've not seen a KState LB make in a while. It was a very athletic and instinctual play
  • Walker 1 made 0 missed. Consistently getting good pressure off the edge. 2 Q1 pressures contributed to Stanley never feeling comfortable. Q4 he made a great play causing a pop-fly throw with pressure on a shotgun snap
  • Wiley 1 made 0 missed
