It's been a poorly kept secret that the independent morality the Church used to hold has been eroding as individual churches got more and more political. From treading extremely close to endorsing individual candidates (and lobbying for the right to do so) to taking political stands against politicians, Christianity has been getting more and more political in recent years, often at the expense of what would be considered a moral take (though, admittedly, it's always taken political stands). What's been starkly exposed in the past 18 months is how the church can no longer claim to have a moral compass beyond power. Its willingness to ignore Trump's many moral and ethical shortcomings simply because they like his policies is a clear indication of that view and now it's come out that the Catholic Church is opposing a law to help victims of sexual abuse get justice simply because it may hurt the Church.
This isn't to say individual Christians have eroded as much (though I suspect), it's instead to say the guiding institutions are getting more and more power/politically corrupt and if Trump has done anything beneficial in his time in office it's exposing that for all to see.
