I must bring something to your attention regarding conference 'sportsmanship' that has me very concerned about taking my family to Lawrence, KS on November 28th to watch the Wildcat football team face the Kansas Jayhawks. The KU fans sing a song called 'I'm a Jayhawk' at all of their games, not just ones against K-State, with the following lyrics "Talk about the Wildcats and the Cyclone boys, But I'm the bird to make em weep and wail" These highly offensive lyrics raise several troubling questions:
1) Why would the Jayhawks include the Wildcats by name in and athletic contest that is not being played between the two schools?
2) The lyrics "I'm the bird" clearly imply that they will be all raising their middle finger directed at the K-State team and it's fans ( that's what I read circulating on social media)
3) They are going to make the Wildcat team and by association it's fans " weep and wail"? These are highly offensive statements that suggest confrontation to the point of being threatened to the point of absolute desperation. Perhaps sexual assault is what they are implying? How am I supposed to shield by 10 and 8 year old's from such abuse?
I want to take my family to a positive family environment where good sportsmanship is on display at all times and I am not threatened by chants of 'giving me the bird' and making me 'weep and wail' for having the audacity to show up and support my Wildcats. I trust this Saturday when the KU faithful sing this song against the Memphis Tigers in a game that has absolutely nothing to do with K-State that you will contact Big 12 commissioner Bowlsby on my family's behalf and make sure this abusive and disrespectful behavior is punished and ended before November 28, 2015 when I plan to be in Lawrence.
Thank you
