I want to preface this by saying I'm not sure if there are any teams that can go 4 deep at the QB position. So what KSU was able to do on the road against a top 20 team, was incredible. I think that if Cody hadn't gotten hurt, then KSU would've won the game.
That being said, the difference in the talent that KSU put on the field & what OSU had was obvious & glaring!! Let's think about this. KSU had two former walk-ons playing at the WR position (Klein & cook), a walk-on QB, & former walk on in Silmon. 4 of the starting 11 on offense are starters & at the key skilled positions as well. I mentioned earlier this year on how much of a bust Burton has been this year & was roasted pretty good. Well, you can't argue that any longer. We've heard for years now about how athletic & how much talent he has from the coaches. I'm sorry, but those compliments by the coaches are just out right FALSE!! So far through 4 games, Burton has 10 catches for 139 yards. Let that sink in for a minute...10 catches!!! That was a typical game for former KSU receivers.
It is obviously not all on Burton. Andre Davis is very inconsistent, Klein should be a 3rd or 4th option & Heath's a Tramaine Thompson clone at best. Now, T. Thompson was a good receiver, but he had to have Chris Harper & Tyler Lockett on the other side to be as effective as he was. In short, T. Thompson was a #2 WR.
The bad thing, is now that Heath is hurt, KSU doesn't have a #1 or #2 WR option. Do we all remember when Andre Coleman said that this was the best group of receives he's ever had at KSU? WOW, whatever it was that he was drinking that day, I want some of it. Because this WR group doesn't have much talent at all. They can't get separation from defenders & when they do, they'll drop a several passes a game.
Let's move on to the TE position. I'm sorry, but I think we were all sold a bag of goods when Del Miller said this was the best talent KSU has had at the TE position. I don't know how many dropped passes Small & Valentine have, but it's way too many. If KSU isn't going to keep them in to help out blocking, then I'm not sure what it is that they bring to the team.
I'm sorry, but all of this lack of talent lies 100% at the coaches feet. I don't know if it is a recruiting or development problem, but it is obviously a problem. When half of your starting offense are walk-ons, then there is a huge problem. Are the coaches recruiting the wrong players? What is it that the coaches are doing, or not doing to develop the scholarship players that they are bringing in?
On Saturday, the announcers were talking about KSU's "walk on program" & how successful it is. Then they showed a statistic that just blew me away. 40 of KSU's 115 players on the roster are walk-ons, or over 33%. That is ridiculous!!! Again, it is just a complete failure by the coaching staff to get in good talent, keep it at KSU & then develop it.
