Do you have a dream game you would like to see someone do? I have always dreamed about an open world Civil War game where you could chose either the Rebel or Yankee side at the start and have a good story line that would go through either a part or all of the war. I'd want it to be a first person shooter where you would use civil war weapons in combat as a member of a company or regiment and go through several authentic battles or campaigns during the war. It would be cool to see some camp life, some marching and interaction with members of your company and seeing or fighting under famous generals like Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Nathan Bedford Forest or J. E. B. Stuart's cavalry. For the Yankees you could fight under U. S. Grant, Sherman, or many others. Camp life could be shown as well as what happens to the wounded. The aftermath and confusion after a battle, and possibly being captured and trying to escape. Interaction with common citizens along the march would be interesting. The possibilities are endless. It would personalize the war if done right so that you would get a sense of what the common soldier suffered through, and their experiences between battles and camp life. Most regiments in the civil War on both sides were from one county or area in a state and they served with family and neighbors. They were sometimes transported by train, or riverboat. You could even be on a northern or southern Ironclad and fight on the Mississippi, or other rivers. You could be a blockade runner, or try to catch blockade runners.
An overlooked part of the war would be the guerilla warfare in Missouri, Kansas Jayhawkers (redlegs), and Quantrill's raiders, as well as the battles in the region in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, East Texas and Lousiana. The regular armies in the far west were much smaller than in the west, but the battles were just as brutal. You had a lot of raiding and fighting in those states that might be easier to portray, but might not have the appeal of the war in the East. You could have scouting missions, espionage, go on cavalry raids to capture supplies, tear up railroad tracks and cause chaos.I would say the two should be separate games.
Something like BAND OF BROTHERS could be done for WW2 as you fight through Europe or in a tank division on either side would be cool too. Some of the newer open world games are finally giving me hope that such games are possible and could teach a little history along with the gaming.
