What do you expect from Jesse Ertz in his second career start at quarterback (well, essentially his first)? Please no injury jokes.
I'm probably expecting too much, but I believe Jesse is going play well.
He's been around the program for a long time and seems to have a lot of confidence to go along with his leadership qualities (I've only read glowing remarks from teammates). Of course he needs to prove what he can do in a real game.
A huge factor is obviously K-State's O-line. If the O-line cannot protect and open up some holes, it will be a rough outing for Jesse (as it would be for any QB starting his first game).
O-line:
Risner "should" be an improvement at Right Tackle over a year ago.
Scott Frantz (RS Freshman) has big shoes to fill, but like Ertz, I've only heard & read good things about Scott.
Najvar was reportedly neck & neck with Risner to start at Center a year ago (Source B).
I'm confident that a couple of players will (or have) separated at the Guard position.
I'm sure the unit will have some breakdowns, but all things considered, I'm optimistic the line will perform well (then again, Jesse could be running for his life and RBs won't see daylight..ha).
What about Stanford's defense ?
Stanford lost two starting cornerbacks from last season, two starting d-lineman, and a super-stud at LB (141 tackles last season).
Stanford has to replace their #1, #2, #4, #9, #11 tacklers from a year ago.
I'm sure Stanford will have some very good players stepping in ... but hopefully they will struggle in game one.
K-State has to replace their #6, #7, #10, #11 tacklers from a year ago. The CATS return a proven All Big 12 caliber player in Barnett (Dante was K-State's #2 tackler in 2014).
Here's my prediction:
Ertz: 17 of 27 for 245 yards, 2 passing TDs, 1 INT, 65 rushing yards (1 rushing TD).
Pringle (or Zuber) will haul in a long TD pass.
K-State upsets Stanford... yeah baby !!
