I got to thinking, this year sucked to finish at or below 500 in conference play. It means we weren't in the elite of the conference this year, and it reminded me of the wooly years. Then I got to thinking, are we so upset because of 1 year, or because we expect a top 10 basketball team every year without exception like KU.
Since Wooly left, we have had just 1 year at or below 500 in conference play. In fact, KU is the ONLY conference team not to finish among the bottom half at least once during that span. Among our other B12 peers in that same timeframe:
KU - 0
KSU - 1 time
UT - 3 times
OU - 4 times
Baylor - 5 times
OSU - 6 times
Tech - 7 times
If we add in the last 5 wooly years, take it back to 2012 when Martin left looking at the 4 deserters too:
KU - 0
UT - 1 time
OU - 4 times
KSU - 5 times
MU - 5 times
OSU - 5 times
Tech - 6 times
TAM - 6 times
CU - 7 times
Baylor - 8 times
ISU - 9 times
NU - 10 times
So when I see all these posters talking about "the direction of the program" and fire Bruce, I mean, yeah we weren't at the top, but really, how many teams in this country can legitimately expect to be at the top of a conference with a great deal of parity year in and year out without at least a down year every once and awhile? We've had an exceptionally fortunate string of years since huggins took over. Even he finished with a losing conference record his first two years at WVU. Martin still has yet to produce a winning conference record at south carolina.
