This film made many rethink their initial plans to spend time at the shore. While the film raised primal fears in many about wadding into the ocean, it was based on a true story of a major attack in 1916 in New Jersey, where a massive white shark entered Matawan Creek and killed a number of kids swimming there. It could have been the thought of being devoured by this monster or it could have been the musical score that gave everyone the "willies," no pun intended.
