No matter what happens the previous Fall & Winter, come Spring time, Texas is ranked in most pre-season polls. Texas finished the 2016 season with a 5 & 7 record. 3 & 6 in the Big 12.
Charlie Strong’s fate was sealed, signed, & delivered with an unexplainable loss to ku.
Once the savior, Charlie became the goat.
The new savior has blown into Austin and the hype is flowing like the beer on 6th street in Austin.
Texas is an instant Top 25 team (well, most polls say as much).
What about Tom Herman?
Herman comes to Texas with 2 years of head coaching experience (at Houston).
As most know, Houston was resurrected by Art Briles. Over the past 10 years, Houston ranks #22 in games won. The last 2 of those 10 years, were under Herman. In short, Herman took over a healthy program at Houston. Houston was coming off back-to-back 8 & 5 seasons when Herman arrived at Houston. In his first year, Houston had a great season = 13 & 1. The season ended with an upset win over Florida State in the Peach Bowl. The only loss in Herman’s first season was a 20 to 17 set-back against UConn.
As one would expect, there was a ton of hype for Houston going into the 2016 season.
The Cougars took down an over-confident bunch of Sooners to open the season (the cocky Mayfield got abused). Huge Win for Houston. A few weeks later, the inexplicable happened, Houston lost to Navy. Even a bigger shock, two weeks after losing to Navy, the Cougars were beaten down by SMU 16 to 38 (SMU finished last season 5 & 7). Houston would later lose to Memphis. The Cougars did not play in the American Conference championship game. To end their season, the Cougars got whooped by San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl (34 to 10).
I don’t know if Houston suffered injuries or what happened, but their season did not go as planned. That said, Herman recorded two big wins = OU & Lousiville.
So what do you think about Herman, do you think he will turn the Horns around in one season and win 8 or 9 (or more) games?
Keep in mind, Charlie came to Texas with a pretty good resume as well. Charlie Strong coached 4 years at Louisville before taking the job at Texas. In his last two seasons at Louisville: 11 & 2 and 12 & 1 respectively.
Herman will have good talent to work with ...and I expect he will do a very good job recruiting to Texas. That said, you and I would probably do a good job recruiting to Texas ..ha.
I believe the Texas faithful (and the pre-season pollsters) are expecting a little too much, a little too early. I would not be surprised to see Texas only win 4 games, but I will be surprised if Texas wins more 7 games. If I had to pick a win number for Texas next season, I would go with 5 or 6.
Then again, maybe Charlie was that bad and Herman is that good??
PS> I believe K-State is playing Texas at a perfect time (ditto for Baylor). K-State plays Texas early in the season. The CATS will have film from 4 games to evaluate what Texas is trying to do. Texas will be in the process of implementing a new system. I like those apples.
GO STATE !
