Stepping into Fantasy Land here and believing Gene can actually get it done. But why?
Given that a substantial contingent of K-State fans who are perfectly happy with the way things are. Who are completely convinced that K-State cannot really compete on a regular basis, in anything. Who consider 1 out of every 4 years to the NCAA tourney perfectly acceptable, and have now resolved themselves to the fact that K-State will not be a CFPO contender and probably not even a conference championship contender in football. In fact, they're now resolute in believing that the platitudes of #family and doing it the right way, and making sure the "kids" are the type that mom and dad want to see coming through the front door with their son or daughter . . . usurp on field/court success.
It would seem that spending $200-$250 million (more) on athletic facilities is a massive waste of money. K-State has already shored up the things that really matter to players and coaches, and the big boosters are surrounded in very fine accouterments.
Get the soccer and baseball stadiums done, slap in a new outdoor track surface. Maybe a new indoor track surface and few more things at Ahearn for Volleyball. Fix the roof on Bramlage and gussy up the indoor facilities some. $30-$40 million tops. The rest is just fluff, and with the malaise of on field/court performance setting in, attendance will drop and so who cares if the East Side of the stadium looks like the West side, and who would care if there's no nice North Endzone and much nicer donor room on Bramlage? They can have events in the WSC and then walk over to Bramlage for b-ball.
In fact, it could be argued that new Vanier and the Ice Family Basketball Facility were in fact a $111 million dollar waste of money because to date, neither has moved the needle in any substantial way.
At least the WSC is a profit center.
