I'm a music teacher in the Sacramento area, and one of my private students is the daughter of former NBA player Brad Miller. Brad played college ball at Purdue under Gene Keady, and HCBW was an assistant at the time. I was wearing a K-State t-shirt the other day, and he said, "Oh cool, you're a K-State guy. Bruce Weber was the coach who recruited me at Purdue." We talked a bit about the fact that Weber's been more or less on the hot seat at K-State. Brad said he really likes BW and thinks he's a great coach, although he did acknowledge that some coaches are good at being assistants, but for whatever reason(s) their skill set doesn't transfer well to the head coach position. That was his overall take on it.
I'm sure that's not an earth-shattering statement to anyone. Nevertheless, I appreciated getting a perspective from someone who played basketball at the highest levels for nearly 20 years. But the more I thought about it, the more I think that's really the issue with HCBW. You'll hear a lot of announcers, reporters, and players say Weber is a really good coach. But it doesn't seem like he has the emotional makeup or the dynamic leadership ability to be a CEO, as it were, at least not at the D-I level.
