I've been thinking since yesterday, as it appears many others have as well.
Why do I need to know who the HCIW is? I don't... I would prefer it, but really, it's just a title.
For all we know, someone on the current staff could now be pegged as the HCIW, just without the public title. (groan at current options)
This is why I think so many people want a public succession plan laid out. If you believe the report yesterday, the only real thing Leavitt refuted was the title of "HCIW"... I can't find where he ever said he wasn't lined up to be the DC for this season, just that he wasn't going to be the "HCIW".
That said, if he came back and was announced as the DC for this season, nearly everyone would have known it was just a matter of time before he took over and immediately that waters would have been calm, and remained still throughout this season, regardless of record in my belief.
One thing is for certain, JL being named DC for this season would have given this fan base something to rally behind and someone who we appreciated and knew could produce great defenses out there calling the plays.
That alone would have been something to get incredibly excited over, so we could finally move past the "bend and bend and bend forever" style we're suddenly accustomed to.
I don't believe the term HCIW would have ever been attached to JL's name if he were announced here, it wouldn't need to be. But how great would it have been just to have him back as the DC? Goosebumps compared to what we've currently got.
