So Navy lost 55-3 tonight. It was a shocking performance. The game was, after all, a pick em.
And yet their coach basically telegraphed before the game that they'd play poorly.
I've read a lot of coach quotes through the years. I've never read one like that. He was basically saying "We won't be our best and that's okay."
Anyway, I listened to Klieman today, and I can't say I've heard him like this before. He wasn't saying "we'll suck" the way Niumatalolo did, but he wasn't exactly oozing with confidence either. He didn't give the impression that his team is as prepared as he wants them to be. Which of course is understandable. But I'm wondering: How far behind are they? How much live tackling has the team done compared to how much they'd usually have done by now? How much worse of a product can we expect from K-State, up against a team that already has a game under their belt?
Not saying K-State is gonna turn in a Navy-like performance. But for those who know, best guess: how prepared will they truly be based on preseason work/practice/prep?
And yet their coach basically telegraphed before the game that they'd play poorly.
“Will we be ready football-wise?” Niumatalolo asked. “I’m super nervous. Defensively, our coaches are concerned about tackling. Offensively, we’re concerned about blocking. We haven’t done anything live. If we can’t block or tackle, I told guys, don’t worry about it. I made the decision early on that I was going to err on the side of safety than football. That was just my philosophy.”
