We sometimes under-weight the huge role luck plays in a football game.
I went back through the OU game and observed:
Unlucky for KState
Unlucky for OU
I went back through the OU game and observed:
Unlucky for KState
- Wright's fumble (with 2 hands on the ball when contact was initiated) bounced right to the waiting defender for a huge 70 yard swap of field position
- OU puts in the backup QB on 2nd and Goal and the shotgun snap goes right through his hands. The 1 OU guy in area recovers
- End of the half, zone read Rattle puts the ball on the ground, surrounded by purple jerseys. Not only does he recover but it advanced for a 1st down. (more on this below)
- Double review (against the rulebook) of the onside kick. While it was double kicked, the traitors should never get a rulebook exception.
- Weber's 4th and 13 catch being over-turned. See #4 above.
Unlucky for OU
- 3 Skylar passes hit OU defenders
- Brooks wheel route near the goal line should have been picked
- Knowles slant near the goal line when DB yanked on his jersey could have been picked
- Duece's double move in the middle of the field to start Q3 could have been picked
- While OU got their hands on 3 passes, our DBs barely touched a thrown ball from OU.
- Our coverage was pathetically generous. Other than the pass for a punt on 3rd and mile that Brent's intercepted, their receivers could get whatever they wanted
- On point #3 for the Unlucky for KState section, we have to be better at squeezing the mesh point. Matlack was untouched off the edge, but looped so wide he couldn't affect the play. He could/should have been able to tackle Rattler on that play, leaving no OU player to recover the ball. KSU could have scooped and scored with 3 guys in position. Nate ran himself completely out of the play for no reason.
