wouldnt mind making this a thread similar to the golfing thread, where we can talk about hunting, range time, gun purchases, etc.
got to go shooting with four friends and my 14 y.o. son yesterday afternoon. my 12 yo daughter couldnt come this time, had other plans. gorgeous day out. a bit hot but a good breeze. the guy i know the best is an iowa stater. he has three of his college buddies down for the iowa/iowa state game every year. a round at the range usually starts the saturday off. they started inviting me and my kids a couple years back.
my friend has a pasture with a rising bluff next to a creek down in a draw. we set up a short range there with our targets and started out with pistols, pistol cartridge carbines and 22 LR. REALLY enjoy these outings where we can all shoot different stuff. we sometimes shoot clays down in this draw but not today. after we have worn out our pistols on the short range we move to the top of a small hill over looking the draw and shoot down into it from the hill at about 90 yds.
i brought my Walther PPQ tactical 9mm, Ruger 22/45 Tactical, Savage 18" 12 Ga Pump, CMMG AR-15 with EoTech Holographic Site & 3X FTS Magnifier, Rock River AR-15 with Primary Arms 3-6X Scope. i brought all of my active targets with toggling paddles for different caliber guns. all ar AR-500 hardened steel. the other guys had some nice large cardboard targets that we could adhere targets to.
one guy brought some of his vintage WW2 stuff. last year he brought an M1919 30-06 cal, semiauto version. this year he brought some kind of WW2 era 30 call carbine. could take either a 30 round stick mag or a 100 round drum. heavy ass gun but really fun to shoot. same guy had a 41 Mag revolver. he deer hunts with it. no optic on it and we were shooting iron at ~90 yards with it. i was really shocked by the range. the cartridges are long.
another guy had a Thompson 45 Carbine with 30 round stick mags. very cool gun. heavy gun too. very fun to shoot. there were also a variety of other ARs, 45 an 9mm Sigs. two shot pocket derringer.
we set up the long range at the top of a small hill, shooting down into the draw. space limited from where the hill crests and the draw ends. about 90 yards or so. got a nice breeze up there and set up my canopy i bought for baseball season. i brought out some saw horses to shoot off of and a couple of folding 8' tables to lay our gear out on. we had several pickups and utvs. utvs were nice for refreshing the targets in the draw end of each round. shot for 4-5 hours.
my son had an absolute blast. LOVE the opportunity to get him around my buddies that shoot. they all have something to teach. i have probably another half dozen friends we shoot with. between us all working with my 12 yo daughter and 14 yo son, i feel the kids have really learned to be responsible and have a hobby they can enjoy into adulthood.
the guy running the spotting scope on the long range didnt shoot with us last year. he looks up at me after five of my son's shots with an AR and says "Geezus - how long have you been shooting with this kid!!? 3-4" group on a windy day and on a wobbly sawhorse with garden variety range ammo. honestly the scope is not quite dialed in yet. need to spend some time on it.
we waited til the last hour or two to start cracking beers. had the Iowa/ISU game recording so we wouldnt have to rush. listened to the first half on my pickup's A.M. radio. was FREAKING hilarious listen to these guys bitch about the new ISU uni's. HATE them! they kept saying cant we just wear our schools ACTUAL colors!?! had to laugh. most of them are pretty old school though. i think they are in their mid fifties. they had us over for a catfish fry afterwards. the room was a bit gloomy during the game.
