Was sharing some information from the conference I attended last Friday - did not attend the Saturday sessions fwiw - in another thread and was asked to start a thread specifically for this. So any coach who attended please jump in and share what you pulled from attending. @ehamm b.c I know he attended based on our conversations in the other thread.
Will start with Klieman presentation:
1) The more I hear him speak at these functions the more impressed I become with him as our HC. The dude has it, he knows what needs to happen here to get to that next level, and he has a plan that we should trust imo.
2) He is one of very few P5 HC's that I've seen who would just come up to random coaches and introduce himself and interact. He introduced himself the staff I am apart of, 2a school that isn't a "need to know" group, but came up anyway to introduce him and find out who we were. Told us if we ever need anything to make sure we give him a call and that KSU is always available to us coaches.
3) He made sure to bring up during his presentation that he is sick of guys getting into trouble for smoking weed all the time and that his staff isn't putting up with it any longer. He talked about guys not doing the right stuff away from the program and how it isn't going to fly any longer. You could tell he had to deal with it a bit more this year than he expected and it weighed on him a bit, or at least I took that away. Said they have a draft of their team - captains draft players and if you are in the final 10 guys drafted than you are required to meet with the coaches and find out why they weren't drafted sooner. I thought that was pretty interesting.
Hazelton spoke for about an hour or a little more and here are some takeaways from that. Before I start, I will say he is a pretty impressive coach as well. Think he is easily my favorite coach on this staff and one I hope we can hold onto for a while.
1) Knows we sucked at tackling and is top priority for this off-season to get better. You could tell it pissed him off with how many missed tackles we had.
2) They track defensive plays in practice and grade players with positive pt's for hussle plays/INT's/FF/FR/etc...also give negative pt's for not hussling/missed tackles/missed assignments/etc... E. Sullivan was in the negatives (which is bad) on this and thought it was surprising considering he was a starter on defense, had a lot of loafing penalties on this chart that Hazelton showed. Trussel had one of the top 2 overall worst scores out of all defensive players with a -40 pts. Hazelton didn't specifically mention these players it was just a chart he showed when talking about defensive philosophy stuff and how they track things.
3) Brought in a Rugby player to talk with the team/coaches about their tackling techniques since keeping the head out of the tackle is becoming more and more important now in football and Rugby players tackle this way.
Hope some others jump in here and add stuff too!
