The base core of this team, Dean, Barry and amd Kam have been playing together as starters for 3 years now so the term "young" should not apply. Dean Wade is the only consistent player we have with Big 12 capability. The pieces that Bruce has added have not been strong enough to make this team a contender in the Big 12. There is a serious lack of wing players to give Dean a breather, he brings in Patrick or Wainright and neither of them are wings. In the post we have no legitimate Big 12 player at all. Our guards, when they can't hit the outside shot, drive wildly towards the basket and several times last night had open team mates they could pass to but kept driving anyway just to have the shot blocked or dribble out of bounds.
We have a guard coming in next year and that is the only signed player and someone will have to be gone to allow for Williams. I hope he is a playmaker.
2019 will be be when Barry, Dean and Kam are gone. In my opinion, here are the possible outcomes:
1. He brings in several high profile recruits to try and mesh will Cartier, X, Williams with Levi, Love or Shadd learning how to rebound, block out and becoming serviceable. They will be able to compete for the upper middle of the conference.
2. He brings in several high profile recruits and the core of the present team make no more progress, they will compete for the lower middle of the conference.
3. He is not able to sign the recruits he is after and has to find last minute bodies to fill out scholarships, we will be competing not to be last in the conference.
The administration needs to look and decide what they want this University's basketball program to be in the coming future. If a half full basketball facility is what they want, they are headed in the right direction. The odds are in their favor.
