If the patios come together as described in this article, that could completely change the complexion and atmosphere of Moro.

Johnny Kaw’s Sports Bar will take over the Aggieville space recently vacated by Rusty’s and Rusty’s Outback, iconic bars in the Manhattan party district that closed in February.

Johnny Kaw’s, located at 1218 1/2 Moro St., will use the new space to open Johnny Kaw’s Yard Bar, said owner Brett Allred. He said he officially closed on the Rusty’s purchase Monday and plans to have it open for Fake Patty’s Day on March 11. That celebration draws thousands to Aggieville for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day event because most students are on spring break for the real holiday.

But after March 11, Allred said he plans to close down the Rusty’s and Rusty’s Outback spaces and make “drastic changes” to the property.

“We’re going to remove the front part of the building and expand the front patio,” he said.

The spaces have both front and back patios, and Allred said Johnny Kaw’s will be able to capitalize on good weather days and many Manhattan-area events that draw big crowds.

Allred said he hopes to have the back patio open by summer, and both buildings open by the fall launch of the football season. The two spaces are located at 1209 and 1213 Moro St.

A 2007 Kansas State University graduate in business management, Allred currently has three Johnny Kaw’s locations. The other two are in Kansas City, Mo., one in Westport and another in the Waldo neighborhood at 7439 Broadway Road.

The upcoming Manhattan expansion will allow Johnny Kaw’s to add activities and entertainment.

“We hope to create a fun, welcoming and updated space with a tailgating type atmosphere that will enhance Aggieville,” Allred said. “We will have the two largest patios in the Ville and call them our Front Yard and Back Yard.”

They’ll provide free yard games, including bocce ball, Jenga, yard golf, ladder toss, bags and water pong, along with live music. Food will come out of the restaurant’s kitchen but also from food trucks.
