K-State's offense rebounded from a poor performance against Oklahoma State with a solid showing against the Sooners. In terms of Brian Fremaeu's offensive efficiency and points per drive, this was one of the top 6 offensive games of the Klieman era against FBS opponents (26 games). K-State managed 3.43 points per drive (anything over 3 is really good) and K-State has now scored 3 PPD or better all 3 games against Oklahoma under Messingham. That said, it wasn't enough to keep up with a Sooner offense that was only stopped once all day (in 8 drives). The start to both halves was problematic with a Wright fumble stopping a nice drive to begin the game and a 3 and out to begin the 3rd quarter.
The play chart shows that the passing game led the day with a flip from what we saw through the first 4 games this season. K-State threw the ball over 60% of the time with a solid 40.5% success rate while gaining 7.4 yards per play. Skylar Thompson was particularly effective in the drop back passing game, mixing in some downfield throws with patience and check down throws late to Duece Vaughn and Landry Weber. The running game was still effective, finishing with a 52% success rate and 4.4 yards per play. With no threat of QB run game, Messingham did a good job of scheming a run and pass mix that kept the Sooner defense off balance most of the afternoon. Also, while the 3 and out to start the 3rd was bad, overall this was the best 3rd quarter offenses we've seen this season.
The individual run chart is pretty small without the QB run game involved. There were 3 other carries, a nice jet sweep run by Knowles, a big first down pick up by Sinnott on 3rd down, and Wright's 2 yard gain before fumbling. Ervin was really good on stretch runs out of 20 personnel. Vaughn's YPC wasn't great, but he still had a solid success rate picking up some short yardage first downs, plus he was really good catching the football. Finally, the power run game was stuffed by OU, gaining only 12 yards on 8 snaps.
