There has been lots of discussion, and rightfully so, after last week's win over SIU. The offense had really good moments and did lots of things really well, but much of the 2nd quarter was a mess and the 3rd quarter had struggles as well. The trio of turnovers in the 2nd quarter obviously stand out. Some of that was Will Howard and mistakes from the quarterback position, but I don't think Klieman's comments about mistakes from other positions contributing to that were completely coach speak to protect his young quarterback. Still, Howard made plenty of errors, namely the pick 6 along with a handful (too many) of questionable throws, several of which could have been interceptions.

This week we will see if the fast starts continue, but SIU saw another explosive and efficient 1st quarter. The Cats averaged over 10 yards per snap and had a success rate of over 70% in the first after over 13 yards per play and 80% success against Stanford. Clearly Messingham and his staff have done a great job of game planning and prepping for the defense in 2 games. Now we'll see how much a 6th year quarterback with a solid level of skill contributed to that success.

K-State's run game was really good against the Salukis outside of a couple of spots. You don't rack up nearly 5 yards per snap and over 60% success by accident, even against a FCS squad. K-State's inside and stretch zone game was really good, once again built on Messingham's system of complimentary option schemes combining inside zone with traditional zone read and stretch/jet read. The Cats also used stretch read to the backs, especially out of the 3 back diamond formation, with the compliment of QB power. Throw in some inside power schemes out of 1 back and a few old school counter trey concepts and the K-State rush offense was dominant against the undersized SIU front 7. Of course, you can't throw out a tough couple of series in the red zone, namely the first drive of the 3rd quarter stalling and failing to score after the defense gave the offense the ball inside the 10 yard line in the 4th.

This week's GIFs will be arranged in a couple of posts, starting with the negative plays we saw Saturday. I'll also breakdown what I thought were 5 really good drives along with a post about some variations of scheme that we saw Saturday and you can look for on Saturday against Nevada.
