K-State's game against TCU provided a mixed bag of some really good offensive football mixed with costly mistakes and the worst 3rd quarter performance of the season. Thanks to elite play from the defense, the offense did enough to bring the Cats a comfortable win, but there was still some disappointment that K-State wasn't more dominant against a below average TCU defense.
Garbage time technically started once Thompson and Imatorbhebhe hooked up on a 73 yard TD to start the 4th quarter, so the play chart is limited to those first 42 snaps. Once again the running game struggled against a TCU run defense that came into the game allowing over 200 yards per game. Big runs from Deuce Vaughn and Skylar Thompson boosted the per rush average to 5.5 YPC, but the success rate for the backs was only 35.3%. Fortunately the play action pass game provided success and big plays, gaining 133 yards on 7 plays with a success rate of 57.1%. Drop back passes were less effective, averaging only 5.8 yards per play with a success rate of 38.5%. The offense managed to score over 4 points per drive in the first half and just over 3 PPD for the game so it wasn't a bad day, it just felt like points were left on the board, especially in a dismal 3rd quarter where K-State only gained 16 yards on 14 snaps.
The individual run chart was dominated by Vaughn and again this is before his 4th quarter runs got him over 100 yards. He was still solid up to that point, mainly on K-States inside zone/duo scheme. Thompson had a couple of really big runs and his 26 yard scramble may have been the play of the game.
This week's GIFs will follow the game going drive by drive showing where K-State had success and highlighting mistakes from the offense.
