Good:
We won ugly and with a performance where almost everyone sucked. This was a better outcome than if La Tech had also played poorly and we had won easily because we (1) wouldn't understand how many areas we needed to improve in; and (2) college kids aren't as motivated after an easy win. We have players who should be very motivated, 2 weeks to correct mistakes, and the best head coach for this task.
Heubner was good. He overcame an o-line performance that was, at times, horrible. He overcame untimely drops by WRs. He overcame poor play calling. He was fantastic in high stress, low percentage situations when he was under a lot of pressure. Is that a result of him being a player who steps up in big situations, the fact that the coaches had to look at other pages of the playbook when it was 3rd and 15+, or both?
Cantele was money, even in crunch time.
Bad:
It is difficult to decide what was bad and what was ugly. I'll put the WRs here because 2 great plays by Cook don't make up for the 4 or 5 drops. You simply cannot drop balls and expect there not to be serious consequences.
I'll also put our running backs here. We fumbled inside the 5 at a critical time and did not hit the hole hard throughout most of the game. Silmon doesn't make up for the group's mistakes here.
Ugly:
O-line play. Kleinsorge got tossed like a child on a number of plays and simply beat on many more. Others on the line had missed assignments and times where they got whipped. We can blame playcalling all we want, but unless you're running a quick pass spread, nothing works when you block poorly.
Tackling. We tackled extremely poorly at linebacker and in the secondary. We turned 5 yard gains into 20 yard plays at least a dozen times. We tackled poorly at critical times. We beat any team that doesn't have a cartoon for a mascot if we tackle poorly.
