For those who were interested in some women's basketball coverage, I was courtside for their first exhibition game against Emporia State tonight. Here are some thoughts.

K-State WBB: Kansas State vs. Emporia State impressions

1st Quarter: K-State 19, Emporia State 19

—Kansas State’s zone defense finally had the length at both levels for the first time I can remember in the Mittie era. Great length up top and all three players at the bottom were doing a great job disrupting Emporia State passing lanes at times.

—No Middlebrook or Martin as both were out with injuries, after the game coach updated the media on their status. He said that Shaelyn Martin is slated to come back sooner than later but Karyla Middlebrook would be a later than sooner in terms of her timeline in coming back to the court.

2nd Quarter: K-State 38, Emporia State 38

—Cymone Goodrich got the start and provided an instant spark in her first time out on the floor. She finished with 16 points and five assists including one where she got the rebound, led the break and hit Kaylee Page in stride for the basket.

—In the 2nd quarter, the Lady Hornets began to assert themselves with spectacular ball movement getting into the to the basket and nailing open shots.

—Emporia State put out some zone of their own and frustrated the Wildcats into some unforced errors.

3rd Quarter: Kansas State 69, Emporia State 48

—Kansas State comes out on fire in the second half going on a nice 8-0 run and hitting on six of their first seven shots. The Wildcats dominated the Lady Hornets 31-10 in the 3rd stanza and coasted for the 22 point victory.

—One player I was impressed with on the night was Rachel Ranke, she gave the Wildcats great minutes and scored a game-high 20 points on the night. A majority of her points came from behind the three-point going 6-for-14.

4th Quarter: Kansas State 87, Emporia State 65

—My final impressions of this game are that although it was an exhibition and the Wildcats were without two key players, I thought they accounted well for themselves.

—Going forward, I have some concerns when it comes to their defense, they started out the fourth quarter quite well but Emporia State penetrated the K-State zone and had a field day in the second quarter.

—The ladies will be back in action against Fort Hays State on Monday, Nov. 6th.
