Wildcat FAMILY,
There should be no doubt about Bruce Weber’s future at Kansas State University, the man can coach and recruit good players. However at the end of the day he does not instill enough toughness or discipline in his teams for them to be winners. Two attributes that most if not all K-Staters expect in their athletic teams. Coach Weber makes excuses for his team and coaching staff at every turn. How refreshing would it be for just once to hear him say in a post game press conference that the lost or blown lead was his fault and he should have done a better job.
The real question becomes should athletic director John Currie be able to keep his job, the man has done an amazing job with facilities and fundraising. He has turned our athletic department that was in a fiscal nightmare at the beginning of his tenure into a money making endeavor. With that said John Currie’s constant micromanaging every coach’s decision has gotten old. Mr. Currie is more worried about not only meeting but exceeding every NCAA regulation than fielding a successful team (see Jamar Samuels situation or non hiring of Jim Leavitt as an assistant football coach).
John Currie’s constant meddling in the basketball program caused Frank Martin to leave. Like Coach Martin or not he is better than what we have today. There was a man that Mr. Currie should have at least considered as head coach at that time, but never gave him the time of day for an interview, his name is Brad Underwood. I can forgive Mr. Currie for not being able to get along with Frank as his personality could be difficult, and he was probably looking at other jobs anyway. I might be able to forgive Mr. Currie for hiring a fired man (Weber) that had successful years with others recruits (see tenure at K-State & Illinois).
What cannot and should not be forgiven or forgotten is that John had the chance to admit and fix his mistake. The opportunity to hire a man that would have been a lifer as a Wildcat, a man that bleeds purple, a man that dislikes KU (very important attribute in my eyes) was clear a mistake that was only more on display tonight. Not hiring Brad Underwood last year as head basketball coach at K-State is a fireable offense is my mind, and the athletic director should be held accountable for that decision.
John Currie can build the most amazing facilities but without quality coaches that understand what it takes to win at K-State those fancy buildings do little good. Either Mr. Currie gets over his ego and admits his mistakes and tries to fix his basketball hire or he needs to find another job.
I spent the 2nd half of the game tonight writing my thoughts, because like many K-staters I never thought John Currie’s excuse filled basketball coach stood a chance against a tougher K-State grad in tonight’s game. John Currie has already destroyed all momentum in basketball that Bob Huggins and Frank Martin created. I would hate for him to do same with football. We all know Coach Snyder has a few, maybe one, heck maybe no years remaining. I for one do not trust Mr. Currie to make the decision to hire his replacement or Coach Weber’s for that matter.
Faithful to our colors I will ever be
