Everyone views history differently in some aspect and the history of these four coaches is no different. Here is my take. Lon Kruger is somewhat of a restless soul that likes challenges and has proven to be successful. He was successful at KSU, Florida, Illinois, Nevada Las Vegas, but not so successful in the NBA. He is a winner and still a great supporter of KSU. Dana Altman was a young coach at KSU. He had an overall losing record in the Big 8. Media wise he was a monotone with the media and one never knew if KSU won or lost the game when listening to him recap a game. He simply failed to inspire the fans and they had difficulty getting behind him. He left for Creighton before facing the reality that he could be fired the next year if he had another losing year in the Big 8. Dana found himself in the Missouri Valley Conference and grew as a coach. He prematurely left Creighton for Arkansas and when the athletic director asked him to yell Sooeey, he was smart enough to come back to Creighton before accepting the Oregon job several years later.
Now we come to Frank Martin. It was no doubt that Currie ushered him out but it was because of extensive donor support to encourage him to leave because of his extremely foul mouth and antics on the sidelines. I have a friend that attends USC games and Frank is nothing like he was at KSU. He has matured and he is proving there that he can coach.
Bruce Weber met the goal that he was challenged with and that is making the tournament. I wish people would give him that one more year and really support the team and Weber. I also hope the new A.D. comes in reviews the past history and mandates to Bruce that he needs to finish .500 or better in conference play, make the NCAA tournament and also get back to winning at home.
Here is my hope. Maurice and Wade need to really add weight and strength. Carter Diara or some new recruit become a successful point guard for the team. Barry Brown hopefully will continue to improve. Yes, in my opinion, Brown improved this year. Stokes had a better year because he played a full year but he did not show true point guard skills. His passing is at times questionable and he lacked the ability to consistently drive to the bucket. A true point guard this past year would have resulted in more wins.
