Medical redshirts ?

Does anyone know if McDaniel will be back next year? I heard somewhere that he might get a medical redshirt. Do they give medical redshirts out to younger players who aren't seniors who didn't play for the year because of sickness or injury? Delton was injured, Ertz didn't play but one down, and Banks was out all season with Mono? Do they qualify? or just lose a year of elgibility? I don't understand how it works so you guys that do help me out.
