Sam Bertelson is headed to the Big 12 Conference to play baseball.
The Midland High senior infielder announced his commitment to Kansas State University, Tuesday night via his Twitter account.
Bertelson is now MISD’s fifth baseball player since November to either commit to or sign with a major Division I program. Bulldog teammate and senior shortstop Jaxon Hallmark committed to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in July.
Bertelson, who is ranked No. 1 academically in his senior class at MHS and previously played football for the Bulldogs, said he’s overjoyed to have the chance to continue his baseball career in such a prestigious conference.
“It’s a big weight off my shoulders, but I’m excited,” Bertelson said. “It’s a great feeling to know (all his hard work) paid off. (But) I have to keep working hard at the next level.”
Bertelson, who was named to the All-District 3-6A first team infield as well as to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches’ Association’s All-State third team this season, said he also received interest from Tulane and Dartmouth.
But he added that after Kansas State made its official offer about a month ago, the Wildcats captured his commitment by going above and beyond the other programs competing for him.
“It’s a solid program,” Bertelson said. “(Kansas State head coach Brad) Coach Hill made an in-home visit a couple of weeks ago. He’s a great guy, it’s a great program and I’ll be playing against the best in the Big 12.”
In 2016, Bertelson was a steady presence in the infield for the Bulldogs, who finished 24-12 and Class 6A area finalists. The senior posted the second highest batting average (.376) on the team among players with at least 20 at-bats.
His on-base percentage of .507 led the team among players with at least 20 at-bats and his 28 runs batted in ranked him second on the MHS roster.
In the last seven seasons, Kansas State has gone 206-163 and has made three NCAA Div. I Tournament appearances. The Wildcats advanced to the Super Regional in 2013 after a 45-19 season.
