I’m don’t mean to pick on Vince, but he’s the only head coach I played for. And he did have a way of creating situations

between football, beer, partying , being married, having a kid and losing some credits because of a degree switch, I went one extra semester to graduate.

I can’t even remember who it was, but one of the coaches asked me to be about the third assistant OC and offensive line coach on the freshman team. Got free tuition for doing it.

I was a terrible practice coach, but I could game plan and call plays - mostly do to some tips from Don Powell, the varsity OC and my OL coach and recruiter

sitting in the press box and calling plays was sort of like an early day video game. You said something into the mic and the players did it down on the field - sort of, it was freshman football.

So, Vince.

we’re playing k who at home. If we win it gives us a tie for most freshman wins in forever. And it’s k who….

Tight game. Fourth quarter , we have the wind trailing by 3. The D kept them pinned deep in their end, and we had the wind.

3 times we’re driving the ball for the go ahead TD, mostly running.

oh, several varsity coaches are in the press box watching. Keeping quiet, encouraging, but not interfering.

3 times Vince busts into the press box and starts calling plays. All passes. Sometimes plays that aren’t even in the freshman playbook

three times we don’t score, downs, int , downs.

after the third time Vince says “ I’m sorry, I’ll leave ya’ll alone now”

he heads and and one of the varsity coaches says “maybe now ya’ll can win.”

Defense holds, short punt , we drive right down running , score and win.
