...that you shouldn't force out Bill Snyder unless you have someone else lined up. Period. I know a considerable and vocal portion of our fan base has developed a wildly psychotic hatred for Snyder over the last few years, but the reality is that Bill Snyder in a figurehead role (with the right staff beneath him) is probably better than KSU going into a random coaching market in many years. I call it "random" because the coaching market varies each year and if you have an unplanned opening, it might be a year when there are few attractive candidates, or it might be a year where you have many attractive candidates, or anywhere in between.
Of course, the key would be getting Bill to do some things differently, but honestly, some of that did happen last year. We drove off some old assistants and brought in some new ones. You're not going to see that yield any huge gains on the field for 2-3 seasons, at least on the recruiting side.
This is not an argument for what I think Snyder should or shouldn't have done. I feel he should have retired or at least put in a plan to step down the moment he was diagnosed with throat cancer.
Bill Snyder was our brand, for better or worse. I completely grasp that that couldn't have gone on forever. And maybe he didn't want it to, ultimately. Maybe he has undisclosed health issues.
I just think back through the years during Snyder 2.0. It might have made sense for him to retire after the 2014 season, for example, but again, to me, only if we had someone else lined up and ready to go. Any season before 2014 doesn't seem to make a ton of sense on the surface, except for the fact that he was getting up in years and most people aren't addicted to work like him. But the only time where there was supposedly a plan in place with someone ready to take over was with Leavitt, and now a considerable and vocal portion of our fan base thinks he would be a terrible hire while raving about the annual batch of mid-major candidates.
Bottom line is I've seen programs with way more resources than we have flounder for pretty long periods and cycle through coaches. OU floundered from 1989-1998 until they hired Stoops. Texas has had a long period of floundering until this year, started with Mack Brown starting to slip in 2010 and ran up though this year. Texas had a much longer period of floundering prior to Mack Brown. NU has had some serious floundering since Osborne, though Solich had some good years and Pellini put up a bunch of 9-4 and 10-4 seasons. I like Frost's chance to get them back, but it remains to be seen.
I really, really want us to win, but I think the odds are we're going to have to go through some pain between now and the time someone develops enough to come home and be our Scott Frost (Collin Klein?).
